A Very Modest Cottage

cottage1

I’ve posted before about the beauty and benefit of having a personal sacred space – a place that you can go to to create, connect, be inspired. While this space can take on any number of forms, like a corner of a room in your home, a closet, a teepee out back, or a special spot under a tree, Tereasa Surratt has managed to birth such a space from the most unlikely of sources: an old, forgotten about cottage with history and love cozily tucked between each log – supporting its proud stance among the trees after all these years.

Tereasa wrote about the experience in her book, A Very Modest Cottage, which generously shares the tale of reviving this former tourist cabin – a cabin she had always admired as a child while equally recognizing its need to be rescued (its tattered shell played host to no other residents than wasps – even 30 years ago).  The book even takes on a how-to-guide approach – equipping others who have always longed for a little cabin by the lake (ahhhh…. yes!) with some practical ideas and advice.

What I really love about this story, far beyond the aesthetic lust I feel for her flawless, vintage cabin design, is the beautiful and sweet sense of giving opportunity to something others had deemed “too far gone” while honoring a connection she felt – for whatever reason, no matter how many others could understand it at the time. She trusted a hunch, acted on connection, called on inspiration from those who had come before her (her late father and former residents, alike) and lookity look look what came from it!

There’s so much more you can learn about this story and this cabin and this lovely lady that made it all happen.

This book trailer tells the story of the story brilliantly.

Prepare to look at a building the same way you do your best furry friend by checking out this short video about the history of the cottage.

Tereasa was recently the featured guest on the NPR show, On Point. Put on your listening ears and check it out here. It’s a perfect summer listen.

Stay in the cabin and enjoy the simple lake life at Camp Wandawega (owned by Tereasa and her husband) in Wisconsin.

And, of course, there’s a blog and a website – each delightful.

Meet Brigitte of Covet Chicago!

brig brig

One of my favorite parts of writing this blog is the opportunity to meet truly amazing, connected, talented, kind, inspired, creative lovelies. Brigitte is all that and more, which is why I’m thrilled to introduce you equally fabulous readers to her. It’s like that fun excitement that bubbles when you meet a new friend and instantly know your familiar group of friends will love her and just has to meet her. As is the case with Ms. Brigitte.

She blogs at Covet Chicago, primarily about interior design. In a feature called “Second to None,” she concentrates on local shops and artists, but her scope and inspiration sources are international. A few months ago, she realized she had more to share than pretty pictures. She’s a person who has created great happiness in life, and one of her life goals is to empower others to shake off whatever forces are holding them back and do the same. For Brigitte, bringing items into her home that make it a more vibrant, welcoming environment was instrumental in creating a life she loves to live, and this is a large focus on Covet Chicago.

Q: Your blog, Covet Chicago, is so visually delicious, not to mention packed with great information and resources. Can you tell us a bit about how your blog came to life, as well as where you draw inspiration for your posts today?

Thank you! Before I started Covet Chicago, I agonized over what I wanted my blog – and by extension my life – to be. I have so many interests and passions that it was difficult to pull the trigger. Ultimately, I decided to blog about the thing that made me the happiest – which was sharing the beautiful finds that I often bombarded my friends with via gchat.

Inspiration is tricky. Some days I find that I have a thousand things to share, and others are a struggle. It really changes day-to-day. Sometimes, I find something spectacular on Etsy. Others, I have a story I want to tell. Walking around my city is the most energizing source, though. I could spend hours chatting up shop owners.

Q: You made such a powerful, beautiful statement in your post, Lazy Days and Miscellanea. You share that you are happier right now than you ever imagined you would be… in your entire life. First, kudos for being aware, owning it, and proclaiming it.

Second, WOOHOO!

Third, tell us more about this! What is it within you that allows this to be your truth?

Wow, thank you. I was nervous writing that post, because I wasn’t certain that it really had a place on my design-focused blog.

Like so many people, I’ve survived some real hardships. For a long time, I pretended it hadn’t negatively imprinted my personality. I was basically ok – or so I thought. Looking back, I was totally out of control. Everyone was out to get me, no one understood.

There are a lot of people in my life that helped me move past this. My family. Friends. My mom. My husband. But it wasn’t until I read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People that my experience of the world changed. My largest struggle was with the first habit: be proactive. The idea that I cannot control what happens around me but can actively and consciously decide how I will respond was profound. It sounds so simple, but it changed my life.

Q: You recently wrote guest posts for the very popular Décor8 blog, which, as you say, is a dream come true for you after reading it for over four years. Way to make it happen! What supported you in making a dream a reality?

My husband, absolutely. He has been my biggest supporter since I started blogging. Not only does he know what I’m trying to accomplish with Covet Chicago, but he shares my goals. And he doesn’t think I’m a crazy person for taking my blog so seriously. Additionally, I took Holly’s Blogging Your Way course. I certainly didn’t try to leverage that in pitching her, but it gave me the confidence to just go for it.

Q: What’s one of the best celebrations you’ve ever been to or thrown? What made it so fantastic?

My wedding, hands down. We made the decision early that we would focus on the elements that mattered most to our guests, so we served amazing food and hired a band. We only had 30 guests, so we were able to afford these things. I also chose not to have a wedding party, because with such a small group, I didn’t want to send the message that some guests were more important than others. Oh…and we were married in Cabo San Lucas at a restaurant on the ocean. So there’s that. ;-)

Q: On the Hello!Selfblog, we love to shine the light on the people, places, products, and notions that make us giddy and grin from ear to ear – what we call Good Life Goods. What are some of your Good Life Goods today?

My garden, especially right now when everything is so green. Anytime I get together with friends for dinner and drinks. I am crazy for dinner parties. Walking around the city. I love to explore the different neighborhoods. Snuggling on the sofa with my husband and our two cats.

Q: “Stitching together happiness and all things pretty” is the tagline for your blog.  How do you bring this to life in your own world?

This is the essence of my life. There is a notion that possessions don’t bring lasting happiness, but I disagree. When I look around my home, there is artwork from my travels, family heirlooms, Craigslist scores. The right kind of purchase can bring lasting joy, but it has to be mindful. When your home base is restorative, it shines through the rest of your life.

Q: Now it’s time for the speed round.  Quick – what’s your favorite:

Pick-me-up?

Running. Hugs.

Party food?

Sangria…oh, that’s not food. :) My friend Liz’s corn dip.

Room in the house?

Living room.

Wall color?

Lavender.

Way to be kind to yourself?

Buying myself flowers.

Etsy shop?

Alicia Bock. I’ve never purchased anything from her shop, because I can’t narrow it down. But I fully intend to remedy that this summer!

earth week: natural bedding

Monday, April 19th, 2010

It’s Earth Week here on the Hello!Self blog. Just like I tell my family around my birthday: It’s too big of a deal to only celebrate for one day, so let’s celebrate for the entire week! They love me for it (yeah, right), but hopefully you truly will! Check in this week for daily good life goods and notions that bow with respect to the earth, as I will be doing myself – however out of the norm (or messy) it may be. It’s going to be a fun, earth-loving, and ever-so interesting week here, so thank god you are here to experience it with me!

Let’s start where all of our days begin and where the sun finds us as it rises: in bed.

Can I tell you that I’ve been wanting to write a blog post title like the one I’ve just written since I was two years old. Ok, maybe three, four tops. Clearly I was a psychic child that knew blogs would exist when I was 30, and that I would write for one.

beach1

As an ocean lover who, until four months a go, had only lived in the great yet land-locked states of Iowa and Wisconsin, to be able to have such a post header be my reality is a trip. To be able to take off to the ocean on a whim to rejuvenate, splash around in the tide, meditate as the waves roll in, and take long walks along the beach is a dream come true. Needless to say, I’ll be taking part in the activity described in the Daily A!HA over and over and over again this weekend.

Adam’s parents are coming to town, so we’ll be enjoying the Pacific coast with them this time around. I can’t wait! I’ll be taking my own photos this weekend, but I wanted to share some professional ones with you as I head out.

What are you doing this weekend? May it be lovely and enjoyable! I can’t wait to see you back here next week. Cheers, friends!

Earth Day is Thursday, April 22. Did you know it? I had to look it up myself just to be sure. I knew it had to be around the corner because I can feel and hear excitement for it growing. To honor Earth Day, and to celebrate our connection with nature, I’m kicking off an earth-inspired series of Daily A!HAs that will run through Friday, April 23.

Here is the first one! I sense the quality of life in nature.

If you get a few minutes this weekend, here’s a fun activity to do outside. Grab your kids, your pets, your friends, your spouse – whomever. It’s a sweet experience for all.

Head outside.

Pick an aspect of nature that grabs your attention. It may be a pond at a park you frequent. It may be a tree in your backyard. It may be a planting in your garden. It may be in the line of a sunbeam. Identify whatever that one aspect of nature in your world may be that is calling your name, that you just feel drawn to for whatever reason.

When you’ve identified it, cozy in up next to it. You may want to bring a blanket, a folding chair, a bleacher cushion – whatever – to make cozying up next to it possible. Or you may just love the idea of plopping down naturally – with nothing between you and the earth. Do what feels right and comfortable.

Once there and cozy, settle in and breathe. You may want to close your eyes. Keeping them open may seem more natural. Go with what feels natural. Breathe. Settle in. Focus on your breath and centering yourself. Thoughts may come and go. “What the hell am I doing?” may come and go. That’s cool. No probs. Just let those thoughts be there and move on their way. You can simply come back to the breath to re-center.

Once you feel grounded, start to sense the aliveness in the natural aspect you’ve chosen. Release your labels for it and simply experience it – as if you are experiencing it for the first time. Allow the aliveness it radiates to be experienced fully. Simply be with the natural element. Open all your senses to the experience. Experience. Feel. Sense the life that is that natural element. Allow it to share its energy with you. You may experience a deep sense of gratitude. Beautiful. Go with it.

When you feel complete with the experience, take a few deep, cleansing breaths, shake its hand, and move on with your beautiful day.

“This life is to be enjoyed.”

The single statement, as spoken by my life coach five years ago,  that changed my life forever. A lightbulb went off as the words rolled off her tongue.

“You mean, it’s not just about dodging worry bombs and waiting for blips of really happy times to come and go?”  I replied with excited curiosity.

“Nope. It’s to be enjoyed! Your job is to enjoy this life.”

That’s all I needed to hear to reconnect with the truth I had lost somewhere in the midst of it all. And with that single truth, may we LIVE FOR THE FUN OF IT today – and every single day to come.

3.31.10

Today seems like the perfect day to own our loveliness – to see it, to feel it, to know it, to be grateful for it.

And here’s the really fun and juicy part -notice what happens within your world today as you consciously choose to focus on that which you love about yourself. Go ahead and catch the negative thoughts and tell them to take a hike today, because TODAY is the day we acknowledge our loveliness.

Here are some ways to do so:

  1. Whip out the journal and list 50 ways in which you are lovely. That’s right – 50! You’ve got a million, so this should actually be easy. ;)
  2. Immerse yourself in a project that allows your natural passions, talents, creativity to flow
  3. Practice exquisite self care
  4. Buy or write yourself a greeting card
  5. Take in the compliments you are given today – rather than deny or dismiss
  6. Nourish yourself with clean, whole foods
  7. Do something that makes you grin from ear to ear
  8. See the good of yourself in the good of others. When you come across a way of being that you admire in another person, bring it back to yourself and acknowledge the piece of you that is already like that other person
  9. Speak your truth
  10. Make a 100% completely authentic decision. Step out just as you are – fully, wonderfully, uniquely
  11. Allow self-deprecating humor to take a back seat today

How do you plan to acknowledge your loveliness today? Do you have any ideas to add to the list? We’d all love to hear. Just leave your lovely ideas on loveliness in the comments section. Cheers!

For today’s commentary, I’m turning it over to the beautifully written words of Geneen Roth, author of Women, Food, and God (excellent read, F.Y.I.). She’s says it best:

“Recurrent negative feelings — those that loop in the same cycles again and again without changing — are unmet knots of our past that got frozen in time for the precise reason that they were not met with kindness or acceptance.

Can you imagine how your life would have been different if each time you were feeling sad or angry as a kid an adult said to you, ‘Come here, sweetheart, tell me all about it.’ If when you were overcome with grief at your best friend’s rejection, someone said to you, ‘Oh, darling, tell me more. Tell me where you feel those feelings.Tell me how  your belly feels, your chest. I want to know every little thing. I’m here to list to you, hold you, be with you.’

All any feeling wants is to be welcomed with tenderness. It wants room to unfold. It wants to relax and tell its story.”
