One of my favorite parts of writing this blog is the opportunity to meet truly amazing, connected, talented, kind, inspired, creative lovelies. Brigitte is all that and more, which is why I’m thrilled to introduce you equally fabulous readers to her. It’s like that fun excitement that bubbles when you meet a new friend and instantly know your familiar group of friends will love her and just has to meet her. As is the case with Ms. Brigitte.
She blogs at Covet Chicago, primarily about interior design. In a feature called “Second to None,” she concentrates on local shops and artists, but her scope and inspiration sources are international. A few months ago, she realized she had more to share than pretty pictures. She’s a person who has created great happiness in life, and one of her life goals is to empower others to shake off whatever forces are holding them back and do the same. For Brigitte, bringing items into her home that make it a more vibrant, welcoming environment was instrumental in creating a life she loves to live, and this is a large focus on Covet Chicago.

Q: Your blog, Covet Chicago, is so visually delicious, not to mention packed with great information and resources. Can you tell us a bit about how your blog came to life, as well as where you draw inspiration for your posts today?
Thank you! Before I started Covet Chicago, I agonized over what I wanted my blog – and by extension my life – to be. I have so many interests and passions that it was difficult to pull the trigger. Ultimately, I decided to blog about the thing that made me the happiest – which was sharing the beautiful finds that I often bombarded my friends with via gchat.
Inspiration is tricky. Some days I find that I have a thousand things to share, and others are a struggle. It really changes day-to-day. Sometimes, I find something spectacular on Etsy. Others, I have a story I want to tell. Walking around my city is the most energizing source, though. I could spend hours chatting up shop owners.

Q: You made such a powerful, beautiful statement in your post, Lazy Days and Miscellanea. You share that you are happier right now than you ever imagined you would be… in your entire life. First, kudos for being aware, owning it, and proclaiming it.
Second, WOOHOO!
Third, tell us more about this! What is it within you that allows this to be your truth?
Wow, thank you. I was nervous writing that post, because I wasn’t certain that it really had a place on my design-focused blog.
Like so many people, I’ve survived some real hardships. For a long time, I pretended it hadn’t negatively imprinted my personality. I was basically ok – or so I thought. Looking back, I was totally out of control. Everyone was out to get me, no one understood.
There are a lot of people in my life that helped me move past this. My family. Friends. My mom. My husband. But it wasn’t until I read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People that my experience of the world changed. My largest struggle was with the first habit: be proactive. The idea that I cannot control what happens around me but can actively and consciously decide how I will respond was profound. It sounds so simple, but it changed my life.
Q: You recently wrote guest posts for the very popular Décor8 blog, which, as you say, is a dream come true for you after reading it for over four years. Way to make it happen! What supported you in making a dream a reality?
My husband, absolutely. He has been my biggest supporter since I started blogging. Not only does he know what I’m trying to accomplish with Covet Chicago, but he shares my goals. And he doesn’t think I’m a crazy person for taking my blog so seriously. Additionally, I took Holly’s Blogging Your Way course. I certainly didn’t try to leverage that in pitching her, but it gave me the confidence to just go for it.
Q: What’s one of the best celebrations you’ve ever been to or thrown? What made it so fantastic?
My wedding, hands down. We made the decision early that we would focus on the elements that mattered most to our guests, so we served amazing food and hired a band. We only had 30 guests, so we were able to afford these things. I also chose not to have a wedding party, because with such a small group, I didn’t want to send the message that some guests were more important than others. Oh…and we were married in Cabo San Lucas at a restaurant on the ocean. So there’s that.

Q: On the Hello!Selfblog, we love to shine the light on the people, places, products, and notions that make us giddy and grin from ear to ear – what we call Good Life Goods. What are some of your Good Life Goods today?
My garden, especially right now when everything is so green. Anytime I get together with friends for dinner and drinks. I am crazy for dinner parties. Walking around the city. I love to explore the different neighborhoods. Snuggling on the sofa with my husband and our two cats.

Q: “Stitching together happiness and all things pretty” is the tagline for your blog. How do you bring this to life in your own world?
This is the essence of my life. There is a notion that possessions don’t bring lasting happiness, but I disagree. When I look around my home, there is artwork from my travels, family heirlooms, Craigslist scores. The right kind of purchase can bring lasting joy, but it has to be mindful. When your home base is restorative, it shines through the rest of your life.
Q: Now it’s time for the speed round. Quick – what’s your favorite:
Pick-me-up?
Running. Hugs.
Party food?
Sangria…oh, that’s not food.
My friend Liz’s corn dip.
Room in the house?
Living room.
Wall color?
Lavender.
Way to be kind to yourself?
Buying myself flowers.
Etsy shop?
Alicia Bock. I’ve never purchased anything from her shop, because I can’t narrow it down. But I fully intend to remedy that this summer!
